Asian spice shows promise in combating cancer, other ailments

Note: Tumeric borders on being a wonder herb. I've talked a lot about tumeric in some previous posts so if you'd like more information just use the search function. One of the major problems in "modern" medicine is that of the search for the "active" ingredient. Every herb has dozens if not hundreds of different potentially active components, and separating the scientifically proven active ingredient, patenting it, and then selling it for the highest possible price is the modus operandi of the pharmaceutical companies. Yet in this process, all of the other components and their physiological effects on the body are left aside. It's far better to take the whole herb and get the benefits of these other potentially helpful parts, and it's far more cost effective.

Turmeric, the Asian spice that makes curry yellow, not to mention French's mustard and Hindu priests' robes, has yet another life: It's a promising potential weapon against several cancers, Alzheimer's, cystic fibrosis, psoriasis and other diseases. 'We know that it's an effective preventive at low doses,' said Dr. Bharat Aggarwal, of the experimental therapeutics department at the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. 'The question is whether larger doses can be therapeutic' for disease sufferers.
