Shark cartilage of no use in advanced cancer

Comment: I have very mixed feelings about this. For the sake of people with cancer, another hope has been possibly taken away. For the sharks, extinction of species is possibly averted. Note though that this study only looked at people with advanced cancer, e.g. they were already beyond medical hope. Sharks cartiledge may still be useful in slowing or stopping the spread of cancer in the early stages. More study needed here.

Treatment with a shark cartilage product does not prolong life in patients with advanced cancer, nor does it improve quality of life, new research indicates.

Shark cartilage has become a popular alternative medicine for people with advanced cancer. Its use is based on the belief that the reason sharks rarely develop cancer is because of their high cartilage content. Previous reports examining the benefits of shark cartilage as an anti-cancer therapy, however, have yielded mixed results.
