Midwives have launched a 'campaign for normal birth' to help stem the rising numbers of caesarean births.
The first stage of the campaign is to be the launch of a website, the conference of the Royal College of Midwives has been told.
The RCM said a poster study and real life stories would help to promote the idea of 'normal birth'.
It said its first aim is to give midwives the confidence to encourage women to undergo normal labour.
RCM General Secretary Dame Karlene Davis said: 'Conventional efforts to lower the caesarean section rates have not worked and the RCM is proposing a new and radical change of direction to promoting and maximising normal birth to balance the impact of the technological dependency of the last two decades.'
